When I started my business back in 1994, I only dreamed of taking it with me when my husband received relocation orders. Today, military spouses have access to technologies not even thought of back in 1994, (high-speed) Internet? Give me a break, I was lucky to get through to AOL on my 14.4 dial-up modem (can you imagine, this was high tech back then).
I worked virtually in 1994, using my beloved thermal fax machine (clients faxed in their projects), I completed them and overnight expressed the finished product. Oh yea, I was forced to wait for the check in the mail. Things have really changed, military spouses now have choices when it comes to their careers, they can stay at home, work at home as a self-employed business owner, work out-side the home full-time or part-time, or if they link up with a really cool employer, they may have the option to telecommute full-time or part-time.
Today, the sky is the limit in terms of career options for military spouses and the Department of Defense has really stepped up to the plate on this most important issue — career portability for military spouses.
Every branch of service has it’s own specialized program(s); the Army has the Army Spouse Employment Partnership and the Navy and Marine Corps have the Virtual Business Owners Training Program just to name a few. The idea of career portability is very much today, a reality.
The key to making career portability a reality for you is being proactive concerning your career options, taking the time to visit your military base Family Employment Readiness Center and meeting with the employment counselors. Research – familiarize yourself with all the available resources and then choose the appropriate portable career option (telecommuting or self-employment) that best suites your lifestyle.
The more you know the further you’ll go and grow in your career!
